Aim

The aim of this learning programme is to support nurses and healthcare support workers in all settings in preventing and identifying AKI.

Overview

The NICE guideline ‘Acute kidney injury’, released in August 2013 focuses on identifying practice that might improve care and outcomes in the risk assessment, prevention, early recognition and treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI) in a non-specialist or primary care setting. There are already learning programmes on this topic available for doctors and pharmacists, but none aimed at nurse and healthcare support workers. This e-learning tool aims to fill that gap.

Learning outcomes

Given the different responsibilities of nurses and healthcare support workers, there will be two sets of learning outcomes from this single programme. Learners will be able to access it to the depth appropriate for their role.

Learning outcomes for nurses:

After completing this learning programme you will be able to:

  • Define acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Recognise and assess patients at risk of AKI
  • Recognise and assess signs and symptoms of AKI
  • Escalate patients with AKI risk factors, signs or symptoms to medical staff or advanced nurse practitioner (ANP)
  • Support the multidisciplinary team in the management of a patient with AKI in your setting in primary or secondary care
  • Support patients and carers throughout the course of their illness and afterwards as appropriate for primary or secondary care.

In addition, nurses should be able to achieve all the learning outcomes listed under healthcare support workers.

Learning outcomes for healthcare support workers:

After completing this learning programme you will be able to:

  • Contribute to the assessment of patients at risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) by undertaking and recording urinalysis via dipstick, vital signs and physical observations
  • Report results to the nurse or doctor responsible for the patient’s care
  • Escalate any result that shows positive for blood or protein
  • Calculate and record an early warning system (EWS) tracker and urine output (U/O).
  • Record and escalate an abnormal EWS tracker or abnormal U/O
